[ARCHIVED] Accepting Applications for the Local Government Academy

Get a behind-the-scenes look at City operations at the Local Government Academy (LGA). The City of Oakland Park is excited to bring back the LGA in 2022. Help build a sense of community by learning about various city functions alongside your fellow Oakland Park residents and gaining skills to become an effective leader in your neighborhood.  Past graduates of the LGA include all five City Commissioners and several past mayors.  

Course Information
The LGA is a free ten-week program that will take place on Thursdays from January 13 to March 17, 2022, from 6 – 9 p.m. Dinner from local Oakland Park restaurants will be provided. Courses will be in-person at various city facilities that allow for social distancing. 

Course Topics 
Course topics will include the history of Oakland Park and introductions to City Departments and Charter Offices, such as:

  • Fire Rescue
  • The Broward Sheriff’s Office
  • Public Works
  • Engineering & Building Services
  • Parks and Leisure Services
  • Library and Cultural Services
  • Finance
  • Information Technology
  • Human Resources
  • The Clerk’s Office
  • The City Manager's Office 

How to Apply
To apply, please complete a City Advisory Board application by Friday, Dec. 10, 2021. Please check the box that says 'Local Government Academy' at the top of the application. To learn more, please call Heidi Burnett at 954-630-4510.
