Public Works Complex Named Project of the Year

City News Flash Posted on March 03, 2025

The Public Works Complex at 5100 NE 12th Terrace, which officially opened in February, has been honored with the Project of the Year award in the Buildings and Grounds category by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Florida Chapter. This prestigious recognition underscores Oakland Park’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence. More than just a state-of-the-art facility, the Public Works Complex is a key component of a broader strategy to modernize city infrastructure, improve service delivery, and enhance public spaces as Oakland Park prepares for its centennial in 2029.

The new Public Works Complex is part of a multifaceted effort to reimagine the city’s future. Over the past decade, Oakland Park has made significant investments in municipal facilities to create a more resilient, efficient, and vibrant city. Alongside this project, the city has developed Fire Station 9, enhancing emergency response capabilities; the North Andrews Gardens Community Center, providing expanded recreational and educational opportunities; and City Centennial Park, which will incorporate five acres of newly available green space. Additional projects, such as Dr. Carter G. Woodson Park, Wag Dog Park, and the Parade of Orchids at the Stunson Nature Trail, further enrich the city’s recreational and environmental offerings.

Private developments are also reshaping Oakland Park’s landscape, reinforcing its status as a thriving destination. As part of this transformation, Oakland Park City Hall will relocate to the Sky Building, a mixed-use residential project that will introduce much-needed affordable housing to the downtown area. This move will modernize city services while also freeing up prime real estate at the current City Hall site. The property will be redeveloped into Horizon of Oakland Park, another mixed-use development that will further contribute to the city’s walkable, community-focused vision. Other private investments, including BLYS, Oaklyn, and Oak Tree, are adding new residential and commercial opportunities, solidifying Oakland Park’s reputation as a vibrant, evolving community.

These projects mark significant progress, but the transformation is far from over. As Oakland Park moves closer to its centennial in 2029, the city remains dedicated to strategic growth, sustainability, and innovation, ensuring a thriving future for generations to come.
