The City of Oakland Park’s third annual National Good Neighbor Day, held on Saturday, September 7th, was a tremendous success! A heartfelt thank you to the 65 dedicated volunteers who came together to serve their community and exemplify the true spirit of being a good neighbor.
Volunteers from local schools, organizations, and businesses—including Oakland Park Kiwanis, the American Legion, Broward County Public Schools, Oakland Park Active Adults, Friends of the Library, HOAs, and Broward County Animal Care—joined forces with members of the City Commission, community leaders, Oakland Park youth, and 23 City employees to make a meaningful impact throughout the city.
The day began with breakfast and volunteer sign-ups, followed by a series of impactful projects, including:
- 39th Street Greenway Clean-up
- Gardening Tips at the Harlem McBride Community Garden
- Waterway Clean-up
- Blood Drive at City Hall
- Used Book Sale at Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library
- Kiwanis Food Drive at North Andrews Gardens Community Center
- Community Bake Sale at American Legion Post 222
- Pioneer House & Museum Project
- Broward Animal Care Wellness Clinic
- Family Fun and Used Book Sale
National Good Neighbor Day, celebrated nationwide since the 1970s, provides a valuable opportunity for neighbors to connect and give back to their communities. This annual event strengthens the ties that make Oakland Park a welcoming and inclusive place to live.
If you missed this year’s event, don’t worry—National Good Neighbor Day will return next year! In the meantime, there are many ways to get involved year-round through the City’s active Volunteer Corps. To join, explore the volunteer calendar or contact Steven Mattair at 954-630-4494. Together, we can continue building a stronger, more connected Oakland Park!
