Mayor Lonergan Joins Countywide Panel Shaping the Future of Broward Cities

City News Flash Posted on June 09, 2025

Oakland Park Mayor Tim Lonergan joined municipal leaders from across the region on May 29 for the Broward County Mayor Roundtable on the State of the Market, held at the Downtown Event Center in Fort Lauderdale. The event drew more than 250 attendees—including developers, civic officials, and business professionals—for an in-depth discussion on the critical issues impacting Broward’s cities.

The panel featured Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, and Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin. Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine moderated the discussion, which covered housing, infrastructure, transportation, economic opportunity, and regional collaboration.

Throughout the discussion, participants explored shared challenges such as housing affordability, infrastructure demands, mobility solutions, and maintaining local identity amid countywide growth. Oakland Park’s approach, as highlighted during the discussion, reflects a commitment to long-term livability through strategic planning, targeted investments, and public engagement.

The City’s newly adopted comprehensive plan—shaped by extensive community input—guides measured, compatible development that preserves Oakland Park’s small-town charm. Infrastructure improvements are progressing citywide, including water and sewer system upgrades, implementation of the stormwater master plan, and long-term ADA accessibility enhancements. Mobility initiatives such as expanded shuttle service, high-visibility bike lanes, and improved streetscapes are also underway.

Oakland Park is prioritizing diverse, attainable housing options in response to rising housing costs. Developments like the Village at Oakland Park, Sky, and Horizon are designed to support various income levels and household types. Updates to planning and zoning policies further enable a mix of housing that meets evolving community needs.

Economic development remains a core focus, particularly through support for local small businesses and the creative economy. The City offers entrepreneurs training, buildout assistance, and grant opportunities, helping to fuel a vibrant business environment. The Culinary Arts District continues to serve as a cornerstone of this strategy, drawing investment and visitors alike.

Oakland Park has streamlined its permitting and entitlement process to encourage responsible development. The recently adopted OP3D zoning code simplifies standards and accelerates approvals. Combined with expanded online permitting, the City offers developers and builders a more efficient and transparent experience.

Several key projects were noted as transformative for Oakland Park’s future. Sky and Horizon—significant mixed-use developments—will contribute to a more walkable, connected, and dynamic downtown.

The roundtable provided a platform to highlight how cities like Oakland Park are responding to regional needs with a clear vision and collaborative action. As Broward County continues to grow and evolve, Oakland Park’s focus on sustainability, livability, and thoughtful development positions it as a model for strategic urban progress.
