Dr. Carter G. Woodson Park at 3490 NE 3rd Avenue is undergoing significant upgrades as part of a $1.47 million improvement project. With input from the Harlem McBride community and funding support from grants covering over $1.23 million of the costs, the project aims to create a safer, more accessible, and functional park for residents.
What’s Happening
Key upgrades include:
- Fitness Equipment: Outdoor exercise opportunities.
- Playground Surface: A safer, rubberized surface for children.
- Basketball Court: New court with seating and lighting.
- Improved Amenities: New parking, benches, sidewalks, landscaping, and drainage.
These enhancements follow earlier improvements in 2023 when an adjacent lot was turned into a community garden.
Progress So Far
The project is about 50% complete, with several features already finished, including the:
- New basketball court
- New sidewalks
- New water fountain
Site Furnishings
On November 20, the City Commission approved new site furnishings for the park. These furnishings were chosen to match those recently installed at other city parks, creating a consistent appearance across all parks and city amenities. This approach helps unify Oakland Park’s public spaces, providing residents and visitors with a cohesive and welcoming experience. See examples below.
Broader Improvements
Dr. Carter G. Woodson Park is part of a broader effort to improve public spaces citywide, including enhancements at City Park, Wag Dog Park, and North Andrews Gardens Community Center. These projects aim to provide accessible, high-quality amenities while managing costs and leveraging grant funding.
Look for announcements about the park's opening coming soon. As the transformation continues, we thank you for your support and patience. We’re building for our second century—one project at a time.
