Oakland Park Makes Great Strides on Green Initiatives

The City of Oakland Park is committed to creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly community. At the August 7, 2024, City Commission meeting, the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, Molly Ferch, provided an update on our city's latest sustainability and resilience initiatives in several areas, including enhanced tree giveaways, green space expansion, water conservation, the climate action plan, Storm Water Master Plan, community engagement and grant awards. See below for more information.

Enhanced Tree Giveaway and Green Space Expansion
Oakland Park has significantly increased its tree canopy, allocating $50,000 annually for this purpose. This initiative includes tree giveaways and plantings to beautify the community and improve air quality. Our city boasts 184 National Wildlife Federation Habitats, with six new properties certified this year, reflecting our dedication to preserving natural habitats.  The city plans to certify many more properties in the future.

Water Conservation and Management
The city’s 10-year Water Supply Plan and water conservation outreach programs ensure sustainable water use. We also focus on maintaining and developing bioswales and aquatic planting projects to enhance stormwater management and water quality.

Joint Climate Action Plan 2.0
In collaboration with Wilton Manors, Oakland Park is implementing the Climate Action Plan 2.0, which targets reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and increasing community resilience to climate change. This plan is being developed and will provide both municipalities with more specific actions.

Storm Water Master Plan
Significant capital projects are underway, including the NE 6th Avenue Outfall, Floranada Pump Stations, and various drainage improvements. These projects aim to mitigate flooding and enhance stormwater infrastructure across the city.

Community Engagement and Grants
The EPA Community Change Grant application, in partnership with the Urban League of Broward County, focuses on increasing our tree canopy and stormwater infrastructure, further bolstering our community's climate resilience.

Oakland Park's comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship ensures a healthier, more sustainable future for all residents. Join us in these efforts to keep our city green and vibrant. Click here to view the presentation at the August 7th City Commission Meeting.
