City Advisory Board Meetings

  1. Civil Service Board Election - Nominations Due

    March 22, 2019, 3:59 PM - 4:00 PM @ Human Resources Office - 2nd Floor of City Hall

    The Civil Service Board members, in part, serve in an advisory and appellate capacity in the administration of the human resource program; hear appeals of any regular employee in the classified service in the method provided by these rules; represent the public interest in the improvement of human resources administration in the city service; advise the city commission, city manager and director of human resources on problems concerning human resources administration. Currently, there are two open employee elected positions requiring an election: 1) Current member Mark Voight's term will expire in March 2019 and he has expressed his desire to continue to serve on the board. 2) Current member Joshua Davis' term will expire in March 2019 and he has expressed his desire to continue to serve on the board. In accordance with Section Sec. 2-91.1. (a) (5-6) of the City's Code of Ordinances, nominations will be accepted in the Human Resources Office until 4:00 p.m. on March 22, 2019.

    Join City staff, elected officials and other interested parties for community meetings on Oakland Park City Facilities scheduled Thursday, March 21 at Jaco Pastorius Park Community Center. City staff and consultants will lead discussions on: the layout and location of the City’s Fire Rescue facilities, as a review and update discussion of Oakland Park’s Downtown Code. This community meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. To learn more about how the facility improvements will be planned, designed, and constructed, please visit our Facilities Bond page for updates, including the display boards to learn more about each of the facilities proposed in the City's Facilities Bond.   3. Great Moves: Learning Chess Through History!

    Youth and adults ages 5th grade and up. Registration required. National Scholastic Chess Foundation (NSCF) Instructor Chris Goldthorpe, will present a 10-week class featuring fun games, competitive play, lectures, and chess problem-solving strategies. The class is open to all students and interested adults. There is no pre-requisite other than a reading level of 5th grade and above. The class is for beginner through intermediate level players. "Great Moves" traces the development of chess from its origins in ancient India and takes the student on a far-ranging journey through the palaces of medieval and Renaissance Europe to the cafes of the Enlightenment and the dawn of the Industrial Age, with a focus on the leading personalities of the royal game and on their contributions to the understanding of it. These classes are made available through the generous support of the Friends of Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library group.

  12. Visionary Women – Champions of Peace and Nonviolence

    Age 18 and over. Celebrate Women's History Month at the Library and hear a panel discussion: Visionary Women – Champions of Peace and Nonviolence. This program, hosted by Carlene C Wright of Wright Encouragement, will include a PowerPoint presentation and the interviewing of Susan Kennedy of Bullets4Life and Maggie Blaise a domestic violence survivor. Susan Kennedy has dedicated herself to taking a peaceful approach to fighting gun violence with peace walks and by cleaning the streets of bullets. Maggie survived domestic violence and decided to take a stand against this problem through her organization, Free Yourself Women Foundation (http://freeyourselfwf.org/). Through this foundation Maggie provides scholarships for abused women to get an education/trade to help them gain their independence. Program participants will be given the opportunity to hear these women’s stories and to discuss the issues.
