Taking the Bite Out of Mosquito Season

Mosquito Image

Mosquito season is expected to be very busy again this year. With the arrival of summer rains, please be sure to remove all standing water and containers that can hold water whenever possible. Eliminating mosquito breeding habitats can go a long way to reduce the mosquito population.

Broward County Mosquito Control conducts aerial and ground spraying that target neighborhoods where high populations of the insects have been reported.

Mosquitoes are annoying and can pose a public health issue. The County Biologist regularly traps mosquitos, separates them by species and detects any potential viruses. Findings determine the chemical application used and the type of spraying required.

The best protection from mosquito-transmitted diseases is to avoid exposure to mosquitoes. Other tips to take the bite out of mosquitos include:

  • Keep doors and windows closed.
  • Stay indoors at dusk and dawn.
  • Dress in long-sleeved and light-colored clothing in a known mosquito-infested area.
  • Apply insect repellent containing DEET sparingly to clothing and skin.
  • Inspect your yards and drains. Store or dispose cans, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools or other debris that can collect and hold standing water which promotes breeding.
  • Maintain and clean roof gutters.

If you have a mosquito problem and need spraying, call Broward County Mosquito Control at 954-765-4062.

Remember, the mosquito that carries the Zika virus bites all day long, not just dawn to dusk.
