Free Tree Giveaway

Saturday, February 23, 2019

To help fulfill the City Commission’s objective to rebuild Oakland Park’s tree canopy, the City will hold a Tree Giveaway at the southwest corner of Wimberly Field (near the hockey rink) Saturday, February 23 at 8 a.m. Included in the spring tree selection will be a wide variety of trees and shrubs. Small, medium and large sizes will be available. Information will be provided on the proper placement (“right tree in right place”) and planting of trees, as well as watering and maintenance tips.

The available trees and shrubs are proven to be “Florida Friendly” and more resistant to strong winds. The selection includes: Beautyberry, Bridalveil, Dahoon Holly, Firebush, Florida Slash Pine, Gumbo Limbo, Milkweed, Pigeon Plum, Pink Tabebuia, Simpson’s Stopper, Verawood, and Walter’s Viburnum. This variety of trees, and shrubs will attract birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Learn more about the variety of trees here.

Each City household or business (proof required) will be allowed up to 3 free trees per property. Plan to arrive early to ensure the best selection – the supply of free trees usually runs out before noon.

To ensure that this opportunity is available to all residents, Oakland Park offers a Tree Assistance Program through the City’s Community Volunteer Corps to aid residents who require special assistance in the delivery and planting of trees.

For more information on the Free Tree Giveaway, please call City Horticulturist Lyzabeth Fiore at 954-630-4420. For Tree Assistance Program requests or if you would like to volunteer with this event, please contact the Volunteer Services Manager Bruce Garrison at 954-630-4502.
Studies have shown that the greenery and shade provide a sense of serenity and wellbeing. Property and business owners are encouraged to take part in our ongoing efforts “greening” our Oakland Park.

The City looks forward to helping our residents and business owners beautify their properties and  promote environmental sustainability.
