Tree Giveaway

Saturday, February 24, 2018

The City’s Parks staff is currently planning their next Tree Giveaway for Saturday, February 24 at Wimberly Field, 3000 NE Third Avenue.

Many trees were damaged or destroyed due to Hurricane Irma and the Tree Giveaway events serve to help Oakland Park rebuild its tree canopy and remind everyone of the importance of “right tree, right place.”

When planting, please consider where the tree’s location in relation to overhead and underground utility lines. Mature trees must have enough distance from power lines and in area large enough to accommodate the canopy and root system.

Large size species of trees require a minimum of 30-feet setback from power lines while medium size species of trees require 20-feet of setback. Trees planted too close can topple into power lines and create a public safety hazard.

Oakland Park’s Community Volunteer Corps members will once again deliver and plant trees for residents with special needs through the City’s “Tree Assistance Program.”

Studies have shown that the greenery and shade provide a sense of serenity and wellbeing. We invite property and business owners to take part in Oakland Park’s ongoing efforts “greening” our City.

Details will be forthcoming in the February issue of the “Oakleaf.” For more information about Tree Giveaway events and the Tree Assistance Program, please contact City Horticulturist Lyzabeth Fiore at 954-630-4511.
